Burundi – Heza Hills – washed

Kayanza is one of Burundi’s most renowned and interesting coffee-growing regions, particularly within the specialty coffee sector. Located in the north of the country, near the Rwandan border, the region is known for producing coffees that are often exceptionally bright, fruity, and aromatic.

Situated at an altitude of approximately 1,960 meters, the Heza Washing Station processes coffee from various surrounding hills. Consequently, a “Heza Hills” lot serves as a collective portrait of the different smallholder farmers and hills in the area, rather than originating from a single farm. The washed processing method is traditionally very important in Burundi.

At the washing station, the coffee cherries are sorted, depulped, fermented, washed, and subsequently dried on raised beds. When executed well, this process yields that characteristic clean, bright, and fruity Burundian cup profile.
